Green Point Tennis Club

Established in 1928, Green Point is Cape Town’s oldest tennis club — and with ten all-weather courts set in the leafy Green Point Urban Park, it is also one of the most welcoming. The Atlantic Seaboard location means mountain views in every direction and, unusual for this part of the city, relatively sheltered conditions. It is the kind of place where you can drop in on a whim, hire a racquet at the gate, and find yourself in a friendly match within minutes.

Visitor information: Walk-in visitors are always welcome. The fees are among the most affordable in the city, and equipment hire is available on site — so there is no excuse not to play.

Online booking: Not required — walk in and pay at the club. Visitor fee: R40 per person per session. Equipment (racquets & balls) available for hire on site.

Gardens Lawn Tennis Club

If the address alone doesn’t tempt you, the view will. Gardens Lawn Tennis Club sits in Upper de Waal Park, Molteno Road, Opposite the Medi Clinic, Gardens, Cape Town. It offers 4 hard courts with beautiful mountain views.

With Table Mountain filling the sky above and four well-maintained hard courts below, it is widely regarded as the most atmospheric club in the city — a place where the scenery makes every rally feel more significant than it probably is.

Fresnaye Sports Club

Fresnaye sits on the slope between Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard, and its six courts are among the most dramatically positioned in the city. Wind-protected and ocean-facing, they look out over one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world — the kind of backdrop that makes you play better simply because everything feels more alive. It is a members’ club first, but visitors are warmly welcome during off-peak hours.

Visitor information: Visitors may book courts from 11:30 to 16:00, subject to availability and accessibility.

Plumstead Tennis Club

Plumstead is the kind of club that reminds you what tennis clubs used to feel like: community-run, unhurried, and genuinely welcoming to newcomers. Located on Victoria Road in the heart of the southern suburbs, it has six well-kept hard courts, ample parking, and a groundsman named Joseph who will sort you out with a court and a smile.

Visitor information: Visitors are actively encouraged — it is a wonderful place to try the sport before committing to a membership anywhere.

Visitor fees: Visitor fees are R100 per court for 90 minutes (irrespective of the number of people playing).

Visitors can access the club during the following days and times:

• Wednesday to Friday from 3pm to 6.30pm
• Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 6pm

Visitors are requested to check if there is court availability first. This can be done by contacting the groundsman Joseph. The visitor register should be completed and payment can be made to Joseph or any committee member.

Online booking is not available. Visitors contact groundsman Joseph to check availability and register. Saturday afternoon social also welcomes visitors from 13:30 — R80 per visitor for the afternoon session.

Claremont Tennis Club

Claremont Tennis Club is one of the best-equipped visitor-friendly clubs in the city. Eight all-weather courts, an active coaching programme, and a straightforward online booking system make it an easy choice for anyone staying in the southern suburbs who wants a reliable, well-run hit.

Visitor information: Visitors are welcome. Courts cost R240 per hour. Bring your own racquets and balls — and note the dress code and gate code sent with your booking confirmation.

Glen Tennis Club

Few tennis clubs anywhere in the world can claim a setting quite like this. The Glen sits on a rocky promontory between Clifton 4th Beach and Glen Beach, with eight outdoor courts perched above the Atlantic. Lions Head towers to one side, the Twelve Apostles to the other, and the ocean stretches away below. You could be playing at the top of your game or making every unforced error in the book — either way, the view makes it worthwhile.

Visitor information: Visitors are welcome. Courts need to be booked (in advance) via Portia. Book a court for a fee of R500 per hour. Reservations can be made either through the online booking link or please reach out to Portia, who will assist you with the booking process

Constantia Tennis Club

Constantia Tennis Club is the quiet achiever of Cape Town’s tennis scene. Nine courts, three of them floodlit, set in the sheltered valley below the Constantiaberg — it is a proper club with a serious coaching programme (the Tim Armstrong School of Tennis is based here), a loyal membership, and a pace that suits anyone who wants to play tennis rather than just Instagram it.

Visitor information: Bookings are made directly through the clubhouse — call ahead and the staff will allocate you a court.

Visitor times are during Clubhouse operating hours: Monday to Saturday : 09h00 – 19h00; Sunday: 09h00 – 13h00

Visitor fees are

• Adults – R70 per person per session
• Under 18 & Students – R45 per person per session

Payment must be made in advance at the clubhouse Café/Bar (payment via credit/debit card or SnapScan) prior to play. Club staff will assist to allocate an available court.

You can rent racquets from the Pro-Shop and buy new balls. Used balls are sold at the clubhouse bar.

IMPORTANT: Visitors need to have appropriate tennis shoes.

Welgemoed Tennis Club

Welgemoed is the northern suburbs’ answer to a proper tennis club: seven courts, a friendly atmosphere, and the kind of social scene that keeps people coming back long after their game has peaked. Sitting between Welgemoed Primary School and the Bellville Golf Club, it is a genuine community hub — and visitors are easily absorbed into the mix. The Welgemoed Tennis Club provides 7 courts.

Visitor information: Guests are welcome, but can only be booked during peak-off time, from Mon – Fri 8 am to 3 pm and weekends.

Edgemead Tennis Club

Edgemead is one of those clubs that surprises you. The facilities are excellent — floodlit courts, an on-site café, a pro shop, and an active coaching programme — and the atmosphere at Saturday social tennis is exactly what the game is supposed to feel like: inclusive, lively, and unintimidating. It is well worth the short drive out to the northern suburbs.

Booking for visitors (online):

Racquets and balls are available to hire through the pro shop. Please bring appropriate tennis shoes. Visitor fee: R50 per person at Saturday social from 2:00 PM.

Fish Hoek Tennis Club

Fish Hoek Tennis Club has been part of the peninsula’s sporting life for generations — one of Cape Town’s oldest clubs, with around 200 active members and six courts on Recreation Road. It has the relaxed, sun-bleached charm you would expect from a club at the far end of the peninsula, where the pace is slower and people actually talk to each other between sets.

Visitor information: Visitors are always welcome. Sign in at the clubhouse and pay R80 via SnapScan.

Bergvliet Tennis Club

Perched in Bergvliet with the mountains as a backdrop, this club has eight well-maintained courts and a clear sense of what it is: a serious but friendly club that caters equally well for league players and curious visitors. The aerial photographs say it all — courts, trees, mountains, sky. International guests are particularly welcome here, with their own dedicated visitor rate.

Fees are as follows:

• Visitors: R200 per court per hour (max 2 hrs a week), if courts are available.
• Guests (South African): R50 per person per hour
• Guests (international) R100 per person per hour

The printed booking schedule at the courts will indicate which courts are free. Payment for visitors is by Snapscan available at the entrance of each court.
